COVID-19 UPDATE FHSS UPDATE JUNE 24 ,2020
We greatly appreciate your patience in waiting for us to determine the best course of action for the summer of 2020. The Board of FHSS has been working with the Town of Falmouth and Falmouth Yacht Club to make a sailing program feasible this summer. Thanks to the tireless effort of the Board, we have been enabled to run a modified program this summer. The program will run for four weeks starting on July 6th. There is a possibility that we can offer additional programming in first two weeks of August.
We will not be teaching any beginner level sailing. In order to participate you must be able to handle the boat by yourself on the water, including capsize recovery. Any sailor who has not participated in the program in the past must demonstrate that level of proficiency.
We will be ofd fering four classes: Opti-2, 420-2, Opti Racing, and 420 Racing. Each class will be divided into sections of no more than eight sailors each. Class sizes will be limited. No refunds will be given due to weather cancellation.
Questions about class placement should be sent to us via email at: firstname.lastname@example.org.
Falmouth Harbor Sailing School is a 501 C 3 nonprofit organization, located at the Falmouth Yacht Club (FYC) on Vineyard Sound. The School is supported by student tuition and generous donations from individuals and local organizations. All residents of the town of Falmouth are welcome to participate, and members of the FYC are eligible for a membership discount.
The sailing staff is led by Mike O’Connor, the Head Sailing Coach and Director of Sailing at Harvard University, and his team of experienced instructors. The purpose of the School is to educate young sailors, ages 7-18, on sailing techniques and knowledge of the sport. Private lessons for adults and/or children are available upon request.
The school maintains an up-to-date fleet of boats which are available for student to use during class and the weekly race series. These races are held every Friday and are optional but highly encouraged to help sailors aspire to race competitively. Some of the topics covered include advanced boat handling technique, race tactics, strategies, and the Rules of Racing.
